the pentagon is combing through thousands of pages of documents belonging to john allen. he's denied any wrong doing. a u.s. official tells nbc news that the documents could connect general allen to jill kelley. she's the same woman whose original complaint about harassing e-mails set off the initial investigation. e-mails that multiple law enforcement sources tell nbc was traced back to this woman, paula broadwell. she's admitted to an affair with dvp dp. last night fbi agents searched paula broadwell's home, the home she shares with her family. she had given them permission to go into the home. they took out boxes and apparently photo es. joining me now is jim frederick, editor at "time" magazine. i heard people joke about this and all the salacious titles. but at the heart of this are some serious and legitimate conce concerns. the president not making any huge pronouncements, but starting with general allen here, the e-mails were exchanged over a two-year span. his confirmation is being held up. that's a big deal. >> it's a huge deal. the story is changing by the hour

terrorists around the world are done now on the intelligence side as much or more than than on the pentagon side. general petraeus brought to this job a great deal of strength because of, obviously, his long career on the pentagon side in dealing with regular, non-intelligence parts of the defense establishment but also knowing a fair amount about intelligence as well. so this is a work in progress. general petraeus is say strong figure with a lot of influence. pretty tough for anyone who rises to senior levels was able to move things and continue to move things aalong in a way that most people think it needs to go. to have a robust intelligence community in the post-9/11 world. we'll have to say who the president comes up with. as we saw in the benghazi situation, but it wasn't the first time, there was some tension between petraeus and the cia and the intelligence community and the state department and the pentagon. the kind of things you normally see, but not the kind of thing that this president tolerates. we've seen he very strong presidents like reagan and clinton, very strong in a lo

with the war in iraq over and the president winding down the war in afghanistan, the pentagon faces some deep budget cuts. defense secretary leon panetta has called the cuts potentially devastating. what do you think that means and what would likely get cut? >> everything is going to get cut. if there's no agreement made across the board cuts will be made. i think you're talking about $483 billion. that's a great deal of money. and it's going to be arbitrary and it's not for nothing that secretary panetta is running around with his hair on fire. this is a guy, by the way, who made his name cutting budgets. so he knows what he's talking about, but you can't cut across the board any budget, including but especially the defense budget, without having a really devastating impact on things like flight hours, am niths, training, all the things that we need to keep the army, air force, navy, and marine corps prepared and operating. that sufficient is going to get slush eed arbitrarily. that's what panetta is worried about, what i'm worried about, and that's why there's got to be some agreement
